Description

The story begins in 1971 on the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle’s cobblestone streets. Starbucks opened its first store here, selling tea, spices, and freshly roasted coffee beans that our customers could take home. The classic tale “Moby-Dick,” which describes the seafaring customs of the early coffee traders, served as the inspiration for the name.

Ten years later, a young New Yorker by the name of Howard Schultz would enter these doors and immediately fall in love with Starbucks coffee. He would make another discovery on a different cobblestone road after joining the company in 1982. Howard visited Italy’s coffeehouses for the first time in 1983 while traveling to Milan. He came back to Seattle inspired to bring the warmth and artistry of Italy’s coffee culture to Starbucks. In 1987, we started our next chapter as a coffeehouse and replaced our brown aprons with green ones.
